Święta Góra is an Old Prussian stronghold located on Lake Wojnowo. The triangular courtyard of the stronghold is located on a hill raised to a height of 144 meters above sea level. above the narrow gutter of Lake Wojnowo and is surrounded by a defensive embankment. The first professional excavations on Święta Góra were carried out in the second half of the 19th century by a German archaeologist from Królewiec, H. Lorek. He wrote the following information in his notebook: “The local people say: it is scary on the mountain at night, and especially on Saint John’s Night, virgins appear and dance on the top. It can be assumed that pagan holidays were celebrated here in recent years, perhaps solstices. “The celebrations were probably celebrated with fire and a large feast.”
Staświny, as we learn from the archaeological works of Małgorzata and Michał Karczewski, have been practically continuously inhabited for 2.5 thousand years. Combined with the preservation of the Old Prussian name of the village (aswin – an Old Prussian linguistic root meaning – mare’s milk), it proves that Staświny is the oldest village in Masuria.
